On March 1, 2021, Solve launched the Resilient Ecosystems Challenge which asked innovators across the globe: How can communities sustainably protect, manage, and restore their local ecosystems? The 419 solutions Solve received were each designed to help communities restore, sustain, and benefit from resilient ecosystems all over the world. These solutions targeted various aspects of ecosystem resilience, such as preserving carbon-rich ecosystems, decreasing pollution or deforestation, and mitigating natural hazards, all while creating durable incomes for the communities and individuals that live in these places.
After closely reviewing these applications, Solve and our Resilient Ecosystems Challenge Leadership Group selected 15 finalists to pitch their solutions to the Solve community. After much deliberation, our expert judges selected seven Solver teams for our Resilient Ecosystems Challenge. We are thrilled to introduce the 2021 Resilient Ecosystems Solver Class:
BioMio
BioMio, based in Choachí, Colombia,is an innovative, subscription-based model that ensures a fair return for smallholder farmers, connections between farmers and consumers, and a growing market for regenerative agriculture.
Buy-In Community Planning
Buy-In, based in Oakland, USA, helps people relocate away from high hazard flood areas using geospatial data tools, making space for ecosystem restoration projects as sea levels rise.
Folio Seed Bank
Folio Seed Bank, based in São Paulo, Brazil, is engaging farmer-scientists in a green manure seed bank, which operates in a “seed for data” trade system that promotes a self-sustained source of both seeds and information.
HEAL Fisheries
HEAL Fisheries, based in Depok, Indonesia, is keeping Indonesian communities and their peatlands healthy through the community-based production of Snakehead fish.
Mapeo
Mapeo, based in Madison, USA, is an open-source tool for earth defenders. The solution allows users to easily map land, monitor threats, document environmental and human rights abuses, and share data with local authorities, policy makers, and law enforcers in order to protect their land.
NovFeed
NovFeed, based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, created a bacteria-based fodder with 30 percent more protein than traditional animal feed that is produced using food waste and can reduce ecosystem pressure from the aquaculture sector.
SafetyNet Technologies
SafetyNet Technologies, based in London, UK, decreases unwanted bycatch in the commercial fishing sector by designing and building trusted solutions that enable Precision Fishing—saving billions of ocean creatures.
