Dr. Katlyn Turner
Research Scientist, Space Enabled & Technology Director for the Antiracism, Design and Technology Initiative, MIT
Dr. Katlyn Turner is a Research Scientist in the Space Enabled Research Group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Technology Director of the MIT Media Lab’s Antiracism, Design and Technology Initiative. She holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, a M.S. in Earth & Environmental Sciences from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in Geological & Environmental Sciences from Stanford University (2017). From 2017-2019, Katlyn was a postdoctoral fellow at the Project on Managing the Atom and the International Security Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. From 2019-2021, she was a Research to Policy Engagement Fellow at MIT’s Technology and Policy Program. Katlyn’s research goals drive her to consider how sociotechnical systems and technologies across scale can be more inclusive and beneficial to intersectionally marginalized groups and individuals. Her work aims to understand both mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion, and to design technologies, policies, and norms that foster intersectional antiracism. Turner’s interdisciplinary work draws from disciplines such as Black feminism, critical theory, systems engineering, environmental science, and policy analysis.
