In what country is your solution team headquartered?

  • Canada

What type of organization is your solution team?

For-profit, including B-Corp or similar models

What specific problem are you solving?

The specific problem within the 2024 Global Climate Challenge that we are working to solve is "Strengthen coastal and marine ecosystems and communities through the broader blue economy, including fisheries, clean energy, and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV)".

Whales play an essential role in healthy ocean ecosystems, as well as the cultural heritage and economics of numerous coastal communities. Whales are long-lived carbon reservoirs that play a vital role in supplying nutrients for phytoplankton growth, which in turn absorb up to half of global CO2 emissions. Yet current whale populations represent only a small fraction of historic figures, and they face major, increasing threats from maritime activity and climate change.

There is an urgent need to reduce human-driven whale mortalities. Aerial photographic surveys are a prevalent method to monitor whale populations, but generate terabytes of data that are processed manually - an expensive, slow, and unstandardized process. This bottleneck is a significant barrier for offshore operators and managers seeking to lower the negative impacts on marine biodiversity, and makes it impossible to create accounting systems needed to incentivize responsible action and sustainable operations.

We developed our AI technology in response to a lack of scalable, standardised methods for monitoring marine mammal over vast, remote regions. We use innovative techniques to address the technical problems of AI for marine mammal detection – few, small targets within large datasets, and the difficulty of building a generalizable model that works with different species and environments.

Möbius Observer is Whale Seeker’s proprietary real-time marine mammal detection tool, harnessing the capabilities of drone surveys and AI to detect marine mammals in their natural habitats. This tool aims to reduce marine mammal vessel collisions and advance various broader objectives, including minimizing human disturbances, protecting critical habitats, enabling sustainable resource management, monitoring climate change impacts, and ensuring compliance with marine regulatory requirements.

What are your impact goals for your solution and how are you measuring your progress towards them?

Our impact goals for Möbius Observer are centered around reducing marine mammal vessel collisions, minimizing disturbances to marine ecosystems, and promoting sustainable marine conservation practices. These impact goals align with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 14: Life Below Water.

To measure our progress towards these impact goals, we track the following indicators:

  1. Reduction in Vessel Collisions: We will measure the number of marine mammal vessel collisions before and after the implementation of Möbius Observer. A decrease in the frequency of collisions indicates progress towards our goal of enhancing maritime safety and protecting marine mammal populations.

  2. Behavioral Changes in Maritime Industries: We will monitor changes in the behavior of maritime industries, such as shipping companies and fishing fleets, in response to Möbius Observer data. For example, we will track whether vessels adjust their routes or speed to avoid areas with high marine mammal activity, indicating increased awareness and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  3. Ecosystem Health Indicators: We will assess the health of marine ecosystems by monitoring indicators such as biodiversity, habitat integrity, and population trends of marine mammals. Positive changes in these indicators, such as increased species diversity and stable or growing population sizes, indicate improvements in ecosystem health attributed to reduced disturbances from vessel traffic.

  4. Compliance with Regulatory Requirements: We will evaluate the extent to which Möbius Observer contributes to improved compliance with regulatory requirements related to marine mammal protection and conservation. This includes tracking adherence to regulations such as marine protected area designations and marine mammal mitigation measures implemented by maritime industries.

  5. Stakeholder Engagement and Awareness: We will measure the level of stakeholder engagement and awareness regarding marine mammal conservation and maritime safety issues facilitated by Möbius Observer. This includes monitoring participation in stakeholder meetings, workshops, and educational outreach activities aimed at raising awareness and fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

By regularly monitoring these indicators, we can assess our progress towards achieving our impact goals and adjust our strategies as needed to maximize the positive impact of Möbius Observer on marine conservation and maritime safety efforts.
