What specific problem are you solving?

BATx addresses the pressing challenge of energy access in rural areas by repurposing used batteries for sustainable electrification solutions. Globally, over 800 million people lack access to electricity, with a significant portion residing in remote rural communities. In Colombia alone, approximately 1.5 million people live without access to reliable electricity, which severely hampers socioeconomic development and quality of life.

The scale of the problem extends beyond Colombia to many regions worldwide, particularly in developing countries where infrastructure development has lagged behind urban centers. Factors contributing to this issue include limited access to grid infrastructure, high costs associated with extending electricity grids to remote areas, and geographical challenges such as rugged terrain or isolated communities, this is especially true in Colombia and Latam, where the Andes and dense forests pose a significant challenge in expanding the grid.

For many of these communities, traditional electrification methods, such as extending centralized grid infrastructure, are not feasible or cost-effective. As a result, alternative solutions are needed to provide reliable and sustainable energy access. The best and most common way to bring power to these communities is by installing small microgrids or standalone photovoltaic systems paired with batteries, however, the market price of batteries, makes this solution far to expensive for widespread use. This is where BATx comes in.

By repurposing used batteries from electric vehicles and other sources, BATx offers an innovative solution to provide clean, affordable, and reliable access to electricity. These batteries, while no longer suitable for their original application, still retain significant capacity and can be effectively utilized in off-grid electrification projects. This not only provides a second life for these batteries but also addresses the critical need for affordable and sustainable energy solutions in rural areas. Our batteries are 30% to 40% more affordable and don’t require new mining output, helping accelerate the deployment of these systems.

The impact of BATx extends beyond the environmental benefits of reusing batteries and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. By providing electricity to off-grid communities, BATx empowers individuals and enhances socioeconomic opportunities. Access to electricity enables communities to power essential services such as lighting, healthcare facilities, schools, food refrigeration, and small businesses, thereby improving quality of life and driving economic development.

Furthermore, by utilizing second-life batteries, BATx contributes to the circular economy by reducing waste and extending the lifespan of valuable resources. This aligns with global efforts to promote sustainability and combat climate change by minimizing the environmental impact of energy production and consumption. So far, we have avoided the emission of at least 185 tons of CO2 and CO2 equivalents, we have reused more than 7.7 metric tons of dangerous waste and we have saved more than 60MWh of energy.

Overall, BATx addresses a critical and widespread challenge with a scalable and innovative solution. By repurposing used batteries for rural electrification, BATx not only provides access to clean and reliable energy but also promotes economic development, environmental sustainability, and social equity in communities worldwide.

What is your solution?

BATx offers a transformative solution to the challenge of rural electrification by repurposing used batteries to provide sustainable energy access. Our innovative approach centers on the collection, refurbishment, and deployment of discarded batteries to power off-grid communities.

The process begins with the collection of used batteries, primarily sourced from electric vehicles. These batteries, although no longer suitable for their original use, still retain significant energy storage capacity. Upon collection, the batteries undergo rigorous diagnostic and evaluation procedures in our specialized laboratory with our patent pending methodology. This involves comprehensive testing to assess their remaining capacity, performance, and overall health.

Once identified as suitable for repurposing, the batteries undergo refurbishment and reconditioning to optimize their performance and extend their operational lifespan. This may include replacing faulty cells, balancing the battery pack, and implementing maintenance procedures to ensure optimal functionality. Advanced technologies are incorporated to enhance energy storage capabilities and maximize efficiency. And the new product is optimized for its second life, so we can extend its life as much possible. We do this with our deep knowledge and understanding of the internal working of the battery and our state-of-the-art diagnostics. Therefore, our products have a lifespan of more than 10 years in normal working conditions.

After refurbishment, the batteries are ready for deployment in off-grid electrification projects. These projects vary in scale and scope, ranging from standalone solar-powered systems to microgrids serving entire communities. Key to the success of our solution is the integration of smart energy management systems, enabling efficient monitoring, control, and optimization of energy usage within the battery.

BATx's solution not only provides access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy but also contributes to environmental sustainability and economic development. By repurposing used batteries, we mitigate the environmental impact of waste disposal and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, the affordability of our repurposed batteries makes off-grid electrification more accessible and economically viable for rural communities. Our product is 30% to 40% more affordable than the equivalent product in the market.

Another important aspect of our solution is the clear environmental benefit form reusing discarded li ion batteries from electric vehicles. Every battery we reuse, and sell is one less battery that had to be mined, transported, refines, transported again, manufactures into a cell, transported yet again, manufactured into a battery, transported halfway around the world and installed. We make local battery supply chains possible, even in countries with no battery production at all. So far, we have avoided the emission of at least 185 tons of CO2 and CO2 equivalents, we have reused more than 7.7 metric tons of dangerous waste and we have saved more than 60MWh of energy.

In summary, BATx's solution leverages innovative technology and a circular economy approach to address the challenge of rural electrification. Through the repurposing of used batteries, we empower communities with clean energy access, driving positive social, environmental, and economic impact.
