What specific problem are you solving?
In 2021, the Sri Lankan Government imposed a sudden ban on inorganic fertilizers in the midst of a pandemic. More than 2 million small-scale farmers in Sri Lanka had to transition into organic agriculture overnight. The policy of transitioning to organic farming overnight went terribly wrong, leading to numerous difficulties for farmers and the agriculture sector as a whole. For instance, rice production in Sri Lanka's main harvest season in MY 2021-22 fell by almost 40% on the year to 1.93 million mt, compared to 3.2 million mt in the previous year. This led to overall food production being 40%-50% lower than the previous year in the last harvest season, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This marked the first step towards the worst economic and social crisis in Sri Lanka since its independence.
After reaching over 60,000 farmers, we (Elzian Agro) discovered they struggle with staying profitable along with climate change adaptation, crop losses due to pests and erratic weather, the inability to maximize organic crop yield and quality without real-time soil data, and inefficient use of limited resources. These farmers also cannot monetize the invaluable Primary Ecosystem Services (PES) their farmlands produce.
They are unable to adapt to climate change and suffer from crop losses due to pests and erratic weather conditions. These farmers struggle to maximize organic crop yield and quality due to a lack of real-time soil composition data. Moreover, the inefficient utilization of limited resources such as water, land, labor, pesticides, and fertilizer further exacerbates their challenges.
During our initial market research (for identifying the overall problem) involving over 60,000+ farmers in Sri Lanka, several critical challenges emerged. These include:
⫸ Access to water, a vital component in hydroponic and aquaponic systems, is often limited, especially in arid regions. Small-scale farmers face acute water shortages during dry seasons, hindering the operation and sustainability of hydroponic and aquaponic setups.
⫸ Water quality is paramount in hydroponic and aquaponic systems. Contaminated water sources jeopardize plant and fish health, leading to reduced yields and potential financial losses. Small-scale farmers struggle to ensure the purity and safety of water used in their systems.
⫸ The absence of real-time monitoring systems inhibits small-scale farmers' ability to track crucial parameters such as pH levels, nutrient concentrations, and water temperature in hydroponic and aquaponic environments. Without timely data analysis, farmers cannot promptly address issues or optimize system performance.
⫸ Implementing and maintaining hydroponic and aquaponic systems require technical expertise and ongoing support. Many small-scale farmers lack the necessary knowledge and resources to troubleshoot problems, leading to inefficiencies and suboptimal yields.
⫸ Efficient resource utilization is essential for sustainable hydroponic and aquaponic farming practices. However, many farmers struggle to optimize resource allocation, including water, nutrients, and energy, leading to wastage and environmental degradation.
What is your solution?
⫸ We (ELZIAN AGRO) provide customized/tailored precision agriculture solutions (through web/mobile applications) with integrated monitoring (IoT-based) and automation systems (drip/sprinkler irrigation) tailored to the requirements of our customers (small-scale farmland owners who have less than 5 acres) to utilize their limited water at an optimum level to increase the crop yield up to more than 10%; cost-cutting over 20% of the unnecessary cost related to irrigation.
⫸ Our IoT monitoring system (patent pending IoT) tracks water elements (including pH/alclinity, etc), providing accurate measurements of concentration and contamination (including water flow and water usage data). It aids in precise environmental monitoring for agricultural and industrial applications.
⫸ We provide comprehensive support to farmers by offering a monitoring and decision-support system with integrated automation. Our IoT monitoring system ensures high-precision environmental weather and soil monitoring, primarily for industrial and agricultural purposes. Additionally, our automation system, comprising both hardware and software components, manages irrigation and other agricultural operations efficiently.
⫸ Our automation system (Agro-Mate) is an automation system with many sensors consisting of a combination of hardware and software that serves as a supervisor in charge of irrigation and other associated operations of agriculture, it is an automated irrigation system that continually measures the moisture level in the soil. The Automated irrigation system may be used to irrigate farmland with different irrigation needs. While the system is primarily intended for agricultural irrigation, it may be used for automated plant watering, and liquidized fertilizer spraying automation.
⫸ Our Hydroponic systems utilize water more efficiently compared to conventional soil-based farming, making them ideal for regions facing water scarcity. By providing precise control over nutrient delivery and environmental factors, hydroponics can significantly increase crop yields, ensuring consistent and high-quality produce. With hydroponics, the risk of contamination from soil-borne pathogens is minimized, resulting in healthier plants and improved food safety standards.
⫸ Our Hydroponic systems promote water conservation by recirculating water between the fish tanks and the plant beds, minimizing water wastage and reducing the overall water footprint of agricultural operations. Our Aquaponics system allows farmers to diversify their revenue streams by simultaneously producing fish and crops, maximizing profitability in limited land areas. We use fish waste serves as a natural fertilizer for plants, providing essential nutrients for optimal growth. In turn, plants help to purify the water for the fish, creating a sustainable ecosystem.
