What specific problem are you solving?

India's judiciary is overwhelmed by a backlog crisis, with over 50 million cases pending, averaging 12 years to resolve, projecting a daunting 300-year clearance time. This inefficiency disproportionately harms marginalized groups—Dalits, Muslims, and indigenous populations—who comprise over half of the prison demographic, despite being less than a third of the overall population.

The repercussions of these delays are profound, trapping the poor and vulnerable in poverty cycles. Daily wage workers, compelled to attend frequent court proceedings, miss vital economic opportunities, exacerbating their hardship. Extended incarcerations hinder reintegration, escalating recidivism risks, while the accused and their families endure significant economic, social, and mental burdens.

A primary bottleneck is the scarcity of stenographers; only 10-20% of courtrooms are equipped with them, forcing the majority of judges to resort to slow, error-prone manual transcription. This diversion from their judicial duties further slows down case processing.

The transcription process is crucial as every spoken word in the courtroom needs recording—from witness testimonies to final judgments—to ensure accurate judicial records. The lack of efficient transcription not only delays proceedings but also compromises the quality of justice delivered.

What is your solution?

Adalat AI has developed a revolutionary AI-powered legal transcription software designed to address the inefficiencies in India's judicial system. Our solution automates the transcription process in courtrooms, converting spoken language into text using advanced Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology. This technology is tailored specifically for the legal context, recognizing and accurately transcribing legal jargon, vernacular languages, and even mixed-language communications (e.g., Hinglish).

The software works in real-time, allowing for immediate transcription of courtroom proceedings, which is critical for expediting case processing and reducing backlog. It integrates seamlessly with existing court systems and provides judges and court personnel with tools to edit and finalize transcripts for official record keeping. The platform supports multiple Indian languages, enhancing accessibility and inclusiveness in diverse linguistic regions.

Our backend system is built on robust, secure cloud infrastructure, ensuring data privacy and compliance with India’s stringent data protection regulations. The frontend is built in partnerships with judges, stenographers, and court staff, tailoring features to real requirements of the end-users in their day-to-day work in courtrooms.

The implementation of this technology not only speeds up the transcription process but also frees up judicial officers to focus more on adjudication rather than administrative tasks, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and quality of judicial proceedings.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

Adalat AI has developed solutions to address the needs of two specific groups within India's judicial system:

(1) Marginalized citizens for whom the judicial process has become punishing, stuck in repeated court hearings and long incarcerations waiting for the resolutions of their disputes. Citizens, especially the poor and vulnerable,  rely on timely court decisions, which are hugely delayed, leading to economic hardship and social distress.

(2) The overburdened judiciary, that often deals with a large volume of cases with very limited resources, staff, and capacity. Judges struggle with limited resources and outdated methods, which often leads to manual transcription taking up a large portion of their time. This, in turn, diverts them from their core judicial duties like case hearings and delivering judgments. Court staff, who are often tasked with additional responsibilities due to the lack of stenographers, also face hindrances to overall efficiency.

Adalat AI's legal speech-to-text transcription software is designed to address these challenges head-on.  Our AI system automates the transcription process, freeing up judges' valuable time to focus on what matters most: delivering justice.  By expediting case processing and reducing backlogs, Adalat AI empowers the judiciary to function more efficiently.

The impact extends beyond courtrooms. Faster case resolution translates to quicker access to justice for the underserved public. Citizens, particularly those living in poverty, can finally find a resolution for critical legal issues that have been holding their lives hostage. Furthermore, undertrials, a significant portion of whom come from marginalized communities, will see a reduction in pre-trial detention times. This ensures their fundamental right to a speedy trial is upheld.

In essence, Adalat AI aims for a ripple effect of positive change.  By empowering judges and expediting case resolution, we strive to create a more efficient and just system that delivers timely and fair outcomes for all.

How are you and your team well-positioned to deliver this solution?

Our team at Adalat AI is uniquely positioned to deliver this solution due to our deep-rooted connection with the communities we aim to serve. Our proximity isn't just geographical; it's personal and professional. We are not outsiders trying to understand the complexities of the Indian judiciary system; we are part of its fabric.

Our Founder and CEO, Mr. Utkarsh Saxena, is not just a former lawyer and law clerk at the Supreme Court of India; he has lived the reality of judicial delays and understands the nuances of these challenges from the inside out for over a decade. His initiative to start Adalat AI stems from a personal commitment to address the systemic issues he has experienced firsthand and achieve our shared goal of access to justice. He has a BA/ LLB from the University of Delhi, an LLM from Harvard Law School, an MPA/ID from Kennedy School, and a PhD from Oxford with a research fellowship from MIT. By aligning its metrics with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Adalat AI ensures that its efforts contribute to a broader global agenda of promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions.

Describe the core technology that powers your solution.

Adalat AI's core technology hinges on a powerful combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) specifically tailored to the intricacies of the Indian legal system. Let's delve into the key components powering our innovative solution:

1. Deep Learning for Speech Recognition:

At the core of Adalat AI lies a sophisticated Deep Learning model specifically trained for speech recognition in courtrooms. This model utilizes a type of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) called a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). RNNs excel at handling sequential data like speech, as they have a "memory" function allowing them to analyze preceding words to understand the context of the current one.

Training on Legal Jargon and Diverse Languages:

This Deep Learning model is heavily trained on massive datasets of spoken legal proceedings in Hindi, English, and other major Indian languages. This extensive training allows the model to recognize not only common words but also complex legal terminology, accents, and regional variations. This ensures accurate transcription across the diverse linguistic landscape of Indian courts.

2. Automatic Speaker Identification:

Adalat AI goes beyond simple dictation by leveraging advanced algorithms for speaker diarization. This technology automatically identifies and distinguishes between different speakers during courtroom proceedings. The software analyzes subtle voice characteristics and assigns labels like "Judge," "Witness," or "Lawyer" within the transcript, eliminating the need for manual speaker identification and enhancing the clarity of the record.

3. Continuous Learning and Refinement:

Machine Learning empowers Adalat AI with the ability to continuously improve. Every interaction with new courtroom data serves as a learning opportunity. The algorithms constantly refine their understanding of legal language and specific accents, ensuring consistently high accuracy over time.

4. Prioritizing Security and Privacy:

Recognizing the sensitive nature of court proceedings, Adalat AI prioritizes robust security measures. The system utilizes state-of-the-art encryption protocols to safeguard transcribed data and ensure that only authorized personnel have access. Additionally, we adhere to stringent data privacy regulations to protect the confidentiality of all involved parties.

5. Accessibility and Adaptability:

We understand that not all courtrooms in India have high-speed internet connectivity. Therefore, Adalat AI is designed to function effectively even in low-bandwidth environments. This allows for widespread adoption across the country, regardless of existing technological infrastructure.

The Synergy of Technology and Justice:

Adalat AI's core technology represents a powerful synergy between cutting-edge AI and the traditional legal system. By leveraging Deep Learning, Machine Learning, and robust security protocols, Adalat AI aims to revolutionize the Indian judiciary, paving the way for a more efficient, accurate, and accessible system of justice for all.
