What specific problem are you solving?

MakerGhat aims to address the challenge of youth unemployment and lack of agency, and prepares underserved youth for an increasingly uncertain and technological future of work.

THE NUMBERS: The latest India Employment Report 2024 released by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD) highlights that youth account for almost 83% of all unemployed people in India. Of these, the vast majority (over 82%) are considered "educated unemployed" and have a secondary education or higher education.

These issues are exacerbated by the fact that youth job participation has been low, especially among women, with less than a quarter of young women engaging in paid work. Moreover, for those who do find employment, jobs are frequently informal and low-paying and may not match their qualifications. This leads to disguised unemployment, where their skills are underutilized, and the goal of resilient and dignified livelihoods remains unmet.

The education system in India has failed to prepare youth for the workforce. The emphasis on rote learning rather than foundational skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration, has resulted in a mismatch between skills demanded by employers and the job readiness of youth entering the market, even with a degree. Additionally, jobs of the future may look very different from jobs today and may require new skills and technologies that youth need to learn and be able to adapt to.

To address unemployment and build youth agency, MakerGhat nurtures foundational employability and entrepreneurial skills among youth. Specifically, we focus on critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills. We have a special interest in STEAM, but with a focus on applied learning in relation to the local context and community needs. Through our programs, we aim to align youth skill development and career aspirations with the evolving demands of a global, increasingly technological, job market.

What is your solution?

MakerGhat offers a transformative educational model designed to equip students with essential foundational skills such as problem-solving, self-efficacy, critical thinking, and collaborative communication, particularly in relation to STEAM topics. Our approach leverages the power of hands-on making and tinkering, supported by our technology solution, to shape how teachers and students engage in learning.

Currently, there is a large gap between hands-on learning and current rote learning practices. To achieve scale, we believe that it is critical to democratize access to making curriculum and training resources, and build a mass movement of hands-on learning. To mitigate this gap, we are developing MakerDost, a Large Language Model (LLM) based WhatsApp chatbot to offer support for hands-on learning among teachers and youth. Our solution provides:

  1. For Youth:
    1. hands-on activities relating to key critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
    2. supporting self-evaluation of skills
    3. certification on skill levels, and exposure to emerging technologies

  2. For Teachers:
    1. syllabus-aligned, easy-to-execute lesson plans for hands-on learning, customized for local context and language
    2. extensive training and certification in experiential learning pedagogies
    3. in-class support and performance feedback, and
    4. community sharing of resources and tips, and connection to expert makers for further support

Our technology solution augments our in-person capacity-building programs. MakerGhat focuses on revitalizing public infrastructure at the college, vocational (e.g. ITIs, polytechnics), and school level (e.g. low-cost maker kits, Atal Tinkering Labs). We do capacity-building with educators and youth leaders to help them deliver programs that foster core employability skills (critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration), career awareness, and develop youth confidence and agency. Our educational content involves hands-on activities that are closely connected to workforce needs. We especially focus on exposure to technology and sustainability (two sectors marked for rapid growth). Additionally, our programs empower youth to chart their own path (setting the base for entrepreneurship), and to adapt and pick up new skills in response to a changing job market.

For capacity-building, we have partnered with national government (NITI Aayog, Ministry of Agriculture), state government bodies (Odisha Mo Colleges and Schools, Kerala ICT Academy, Tamil Nadu Model Schools and Tribal Department, Punjab Education Department, etc), district-level (DEOs/BRC/CRCs), non-profit organizations (Piramal Foundation, Agastya), and academic institutions (Stanford University, IIT Madras, Emory University), among other private and public stakeholders (e.g. SELCO, Utkal Centre for Innovation and Incubation Foundation).

An integral part of our approach includes a robust Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework. This framework allows us to track and assess the learning progress and skill development of students using scientific methods. By continuously monitoring educational outcomes, we can make data-driven adjustments to our programs, enhancing their effectiveness and ensuring that learning interventions are precisely tailored to meet the evolving needs of students.

Through our innovative educational practices and technological tools, MakerGhat prepares students not just to be job seekers but to be problem solvers and entrepreneurs who can identify and address community issues. Our model is designed to be scalable and adaptable, making it suitable for implementation in diverse educational settings across the globe.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

71661_%27MakerGhat%20Robotics_1440x810.jpg

MakerGhat's solution is designed for youth from underserved communities, and for educators working with underserved youth. We work in middle and high schools, vocational institutes, and colleges, particularly in rural parts of India.

These young individuals often face significant barriers to accessing quality education, primarily due to a prevalence of rote learning methodologies in their schools and a lack of relevance to their local context. Many of these students are disengaged, leading to high dropout rates and a general disinterest in formal education. Their schools frequently suffer from under-resourcing further exacerbating the problem. Additionally, many students cannot afford private education, which is typically more adaptive and innovative.

Our solution directly addresses these challenges by improving the educational experience through hands-on learning of STEAM concepts. By shifting the focus from traditional rote learning to engaging, practical problem-solving and project-based tasks, MakerGhat sparks interest among students. This renewed interest has already shown promising results: increased attendance rates and a noticeable decrease in dropout rates. Furthermore, our program equips students with critical thinking and technical skills that are highly valued in the dynamic job market.

The impact of our solution extends beyond just academic engagement. It fosters a profound transformation in the educational landscape for these underserved communities, offering young people the tools and skills necessary to advance in modern economies. Our approach not only prepares students for future job opportunities but also empowers them to become innovators and leaders within their communities. By providing access to quality education and opportunities for practical learning, MakerGhat ensures that these youth are no longer sidelined but are instead active participants in shaping their futures. Our solution leads to increased engagement, lower dropout rates, and enhanced job readiness, fundamentally altering the trajectory of their lives and paving the way for a future where they can both contribute to and benefit from economic and social progress.

How are you and your team well-positioned to deliver this solution?

MakerGhat’s team is equipped to deliver our educational solution due to our deep roots and ongoing engagement with the communities we serve. Each team member is local to the regions we operate in and brings in firsthand experience of the students' and teachers’ specific needs. Additionally, our team is composed of education & design experts from Stanford, Emory University, and Georgia Tech. We have non-profit and industry leaders (ex-CEO of GiveIndia, Pratham), engineers, computer scientists, entrepreneurs, and makers of all ages. Our team reflects gender inclusivity and diversity.

Our team is led by the Co-founders:

Both have been listed in Forbes 30 under 30 and received several honors. As academics, they have expertise in both teaching AI and AI applications in education. Additionally, our team has deep practical expertise on how hands-on making can increase critical thinking, problem-solving, communication & collaboration.

Our team’s composition reflects the diversity and characteristics of the communities we work with, fostering a genuine understanding and empathy for the students’ socio-economic backgrounds. This proximity is crucial as it allows us to approach our work with a nuanced perspective that external entities might lack. It also enables trust and open communication between our team and our beneficiaries, ensuring that our interventions are welcomed and supported.

In designing and implementing our solution, we actively involve our stakeholders, including students, parents, educators, and local leaders, to participate in the implementation process. This collaboration occurs through regular consultations and feedback sessions where our stakeholders’ input directly influences the curriculum design and teaching methodologies. By doing so, we ensure that our programs are not only tailored to the specific needs of the youth but also aligned with their broader aspirations and challenges.

Our approach to curriculum development is particularly illustrative of this youth and educators-driven model. The educational content and the skills we focus on are shaped by continuous feedback from the stakeholders, ensuring that what we teach is both practical and applicable in helping students meet the demands of the local and global job markets.

Our team also continually adapts the delivery of our programs based on ongoing evaluations and feedback from these engagements. This iterative process not only improves the effectiveness of our educational and skill development interventions but also ensures that the community remains actively involved in shaping the programs that affect their lives.

MakerGhat’s team is not just working on behalf of the community; we are an integral part of it. We are not just implementing an educational model; we are nurturing a stakeholder-led transformation that empowers young individuals and equips them with the skills necessary to thrive in a changing world.

We plan to make our technology solution, MakerDost, widely available to the sector to catalyze education quality. Below we also highlight our key differentiating factors.

Innovative Curriculum Development:
Our curriculum is meticulously designed to foster learning and practical application of STEAM concepts, which is crucial for nurturing problem-solving skills and entrepreneurial thinking. The curriculum is continuously refined and updated based on real-time feedback from our extensive network of trained educators and feedback analysis from our M&E systems. This dynamic approach ensures that our educational content remains relevant, practical, and highly effective in equipping students with the skills needed in a rapidly evolving job market.

High-Quality Teacher Training:
What further sets MakerGhat apart is the exceptional depth of our teacher training programs. Recognizing that teachers are the primary facilitators of learning, we invest significantly in comprehensive training programs that cover not only educational content but also pedagogical techniques focused on engagement and innovation. Our training goes beyond imparting knowledge and empowering teachers to become facilitators of change themselves, which enhances the learning experience and outcomes for students.

Robust Monitoring and Evaluation Framework:
Our M&E framework is another cornerstone of our innovation. Unlike traditional models, our framework utilizes advanced data analytics to track and assess the effectiveness of our programs in real time. This allows for rapid iteration and customization of our solutions to meet the specific needs and challenges of different student groups. The data collected is not only used to improve our programs but also shared with stakeholders to maintain transparency and drive continuous improvement across the board.

The successful scaling of our model could redefine the market for educational content and delivery, setting new standards for what effective learning looks like. As more educational stakeholders recognize the value of our approach, it could drive widespread adoption, fundamentally changing the landscape of education by prioritizing skills development and entrepreneurial thinking from an early age.
