What specific problem are you solving?

O'KANATA is tackling the issue of the swift decline of Indigenous languages and cultures. According to UNESCO, out of the 7,000 languages spoken worldwide, a significant number are not being passed on to new generations. Specifically, 2,680 Indigenous languages are in grave danger of becoming extinct. In Canada, the situation is especially severe, as Statistics Canada reveals that less than 16% of the Indigenous people is able to communicate in their original languages. This highlights a pressing requirement for initiatives aimed at revitalizing these languages.

Indigenous languages possess distinct perspectives on the world and knowledge systems that are essential for maintaining community identity, cultural continuity, and safeguarding traditional ecological knowledge. The waning of these languages represents more than just a reduction in vocabulary; it signifies a depletion of cultural legacy and historical significance, which is a fundamental aspect of Indigenous peoples' bond with their forebears, territory, and community.

The magnitude of the problem is substantial. Canada has a population of more than 1.6 million individuals that self-identify as Indigenous. However, numerous individuals have experienced a decline in their ability to speak their native languages as a result of historical oppression and the enduring consequences of programs like the residential school system. This issue has a global reach, impacting millions of Indigenous individuals across multiple continents, all of whom are confronted with the gradual disappearance of their linguistic traditions.

The absence of accessible, engaging, and current instruments for language acquisition and cultural education is a significant contributing element to this problem. Conventional techniques of revitalization have faced challenges in keeping up with the widespread impact of dominant languages, which has been helped by globalization and the widespread use of digital media.

O'KANATA's approach directly addresses these problems by utilizing artificial intelligence to develop a dynamic platform that facilitates the revitalization of Indigenous languages. This is achieved via the use of interactive tools and resources that actively involve younger generations. Through the integration of artificial intelligence with cultural information, the platform adjusts to the unique learning speed and preferences of individual users, enhancing the effectiveness and customization of language learning. Modern technology facilitates the integration of traditional Indigenous knowledge with modern educational methods, appealing to a generation that is accustomed to using digital technology.

Furthermore, the platform's objective is to function as a repository for cultural information, stories, rites, and histories, thereby safeguarding a full cultural heritage that can be accessed worldwide. This initiative provides advantages to Indigenous communities and enhances the knowledge of the general public, so encouraging a deeper comprehension and admiration for Indigenous traditions. It also helps to reduce bias and promote inclusivity.

O'KANATA aims to address the pressing necessity of safeguarding endangered languages and the wider cultural disconnection that impacts Indigenous communities by integrating their valuable legacy into contemporary digital environments.

O'KANATA is dedicated to attaining financial stability by employing a complex strategy that includes a variety of revenue sources. This strategy is formulated to bolster our current operations and facilitate the future extension and amplification of our influence.

We proactively pursue funding from foundations, government entities, and international organizations that prioritize cultural preservation, education, and technology innovation. We have obtained initial funding from organizations such as the Canada Council for the Arts and the Indigenous Languages and Cultures Program, which have offered crucial assistance in the beginning phases of our platform's creation.

We have introduced a subscription model specifically designed for educational institutions and community organizations. This model provides an upgraded version of our platform, with supplementary features like sophisticated analytics, personalized content, and improved support services. The revenue generated from subscriptions plays a crucial role in supporting our operations funding and enables us to provide free access to individual users. This ensures that the platform stays accessible to everyone, irrespective of their economic circumstances.

We engage in collaborations with partners who are interested in meeting their corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals pertaining to education and support for Indigenous communities. These collaborations offer financial support and generate prospects for joint activities that enhance our prominence and influence. As an illustration, we have formed a collaboration with a prominent Canadian technology company to include their artificial intelligence technologies into our platform. This partnership offers us access to technical assistance and financial resources.

We interact with the worldwide community by organizing focused crowdfunding initiatives aimed at raising cash for certain elements of our operations, such as the creation of new language modules or the extension of our services to more isolated communities. These efforts have effectively generated community support and additional cash.

Our financial sustainability plan has demonstrated encouraging outcomes thus far. The grants we have obtained have enabled us to go from the development phase to a fully operational stage without compromising the quality or accessibility of our services. The subscription concept has been favourably accepted, with multiple educational institutions subscribing within the initial months of operation, resulting in a consistent revenue stream.

In the future, our goal is to increase our number of subscribers by expanding our efforts to reach out to a wider range of educational institutions in Canada and around the world. We shall persist in investigating novel grant possibilities and enhancing our collaborations with business sponsors and technology vendors. In addition, we are contemplating implementing a freemium model for individual users, which would provide complimentary basic access and the choice to purchase enhanced functionality through paid upgrades.

Through the process of diversifying our sources of income and making improvements to our business model in response to feedback and market demands, we have a strong belief in our potential to achieve long-term financial stability and have a greater impact in the communities we serve.
