What is your solution?

Brief Note: I recently broke my right arm and underwent surgery, making typing difficult. However, this application is important to me because I believe it's an area where I can make a significant impact. To complete my answers, I'm using Generative AI (specifically GPT-4 and Claude 3) to help refine my responses, treating the chatbot like a conversation partner to ensure my ideas are conveyed effectively.

My solution, NestAI, is a customized Generative AI chatbot designed specifically for students to nurture their creativity, encourage ideation, and cultivate entrepreneurial skills. Powered by the GPT-4 API, NestAI is tailored for students in grades 5-8, providing a supportive environment where they can explore ideas, brainstorm, and prototype their own creative projects.

Let me explain how it works with an example:

Meet Tim, a 7th grader who loves robotics. Unfortunately, his public middle school lacks the funding and resources to support his passion, causing his interest to fade. This is where NestAI steps in. By engaging with our chatbot, Tim can freely share his interests, ask questions, and receive personalized guidance on how to explore his passion further.

Tim might start by asking, "What types of robotics projects can I work on?" NestAI, trained on fundamental concepts of entrepreneurship and ideation, provides suggestions and resources tailored to his grade level, such as simple robotics projects he can start with, online tutorials, or creative challenges he can tackle. The chatbot also encourages Tim to brainstorm ideas and iterate on them, helping him refine his thinking and even prototype a project using household materials. If he gets stuck, NestAI can suggest new angles to consider or guide him through the ideation process again.

In essence, NestAI transforms generic AI models into an engaging learning tool for Grade 6-8 students by embedding an entrepreneurial mindset. It inspires students like Tim to embrace creativity, explore their interests, and develop problem-solving skills in a supportive, judgment-free environment.

Key Features:

  1. Customized Learning Pathways: Tailored responses and guidance based on each student's interests.
  2. Embedded Entrepreneurship Curriculum: Fundamental skills of ideation, brainstorming, and prototyping.
  3. Safe and Age-Appropriate: Designed specifically for K-8 students with suitable language and concepts.

Technology:

  • Generative AI: GPT-4 API forms the core of the chatbot, enabling intelligent and context-aware responses.
  • Claude 3 Integration: Enhances brainstorming capabilities, offering diverse perspectives on creative projects.

NestAI aims to bridge the gap for under-resourced students, helping them turn curiosity into innovation and passion into projects.

How will your solution impact the lives of priority Pre-K-8 learners and their educators?

Having grown up in Lake Worth, Florida—a community with a predominantly Black and Latino population—I witnessed firsthand the challenges that underfunded schools face. My elementary school, primarily serving Hispanic and African-American students eligible for free and reduced lunch, struggled due to limited resources, resulting in high teacher turnover and a lack of extracurricular opportunities. This environment stifled creativity and confined students to the standard core curriculum, limiting their exposure to innovative ideas and future possibilities.

Recognizing these barriers, NestAI is designed to address them directly by providing Grades 5-8 students, particularly those from underserved backgrounds, with an accessible platform that nurtures creativity, ideation, and entrepreneurial thinking. Here's how NestAI leverages AI-enabled assessment to support priority learners:

How are you and your team (if you have one) well-positioned to deliver this solution?

The "Why Me?" question is best answered through my story.

I was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and moved to Lake Worth, Florida, at a young age. Growing up in a shared house with other families and two working parents, I experienced firsthand the challenges of living in a low-income neighborhood. My elementary and middle schools were underfunded and lacked many resources, but I managed to find solace and inspiration through self-guided exploration on my first computer.

With no siblings and often home alone, my computer became my closest companion. I would spend hours on YouTube and Google, learning about the world around me. This habit of self-discovery and talking to myself about my findings became a source of creativity and growth.

In high school, I decided to channel this "self-exploration" into meaningful projects to help others in my community. I launched Boundless Biotech, a program aimed at helping low-income students access the biomedical engineering field through an interactive curriculum that could earn them college credit. This initiative primarily targeted the same demographic that NestAI now serves: low-income Hispanic and African-American students.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult to sustain the project due to its in-person requirements. I realized I needed to pivot to a solution with a broader reach. Reflecting on my own journey of self-exploration, I recognized the importance of ideation and creativity in shaping young minds. This insight led to the birth of NestAI—a platform that leverages Generative AI to empower K-8 students to showcase their inner-entreprenurial spirit.

Proximity to the Community:

  1. Personal Experience: Having grown up in a predominantly Black and Latino low-income community, I understand the barriers these students face and the importance of providing opportunities for creative and intellectual growth.

  2. Direct Engagement: Throughout the development of NestAI, I've engaged with students, parents, and educators from similar backgrounds to ensure the platform addresses their specific needs. Their input has guided the design of age-appropriate language, culturally sensitive responses, and accessible project ideas.

  3. Representative Team Vision: Although currently developed by myself, the long-term vision includes building a team that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. This will help ensure that our solution remains inclusive, relevant, and effective.

Meaningful Guidance from the Community:

  • Focus Groups: Conducted focus groups with educators and students to refine the chatbot's tone and project recommendations.
  • Feedback Loops: Implemented regular feedback loops via surveys and direct conversations to continuously improve the platform.
