CLIMATE decentCHAIN
Provide a one-line summary of your solution.
Decentralized, autonomous and transparent ecosystems protection and housing system chain on an agile and adaptive blockchain using the MIT Inventor
What specific problem are you solving?
In 2018, global building and construction alone emitted 9.7 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide (GtCO2), of which 90% is attributed to housing and accounts for 17% of the total carbon emission. In the period of 2001-2020, the carbon stock ecosystems, such as forests, lost tree cover by 10% or 411 Mha which is equivalent to 165Gt of CO₂ emissions. While these carbon stock ecosystems continue to experience pressures from carbon-heavy, business-as-usual building and construction chain, there are no equal pressure or owning of responsibility and urgency to act and solve the disasters associated with global warming from the collective ‘humanity.’
Government and government-regulated programs and its expenditures in social housing, natural resource management, education and poverty enhancement are not integrated in most of the case globally. In the Philippines, the targets and indicators of success of the Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) and the PAGIBIG program under the Home Development Mutual Fund, bidding qualifications and processes, and local government’s requirements in business and building permitting, as well as, the K-to-12 curriculum, the Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act (planting trees before graduation) or the poverty reduction strategy called 4Ps, among others, show an individualistic approach rather than of complementing ecosystems that aim to decarbonize the country and protect its remaining forests and biodiversity.
There remains the obvious dependency on having strong will-Department leaders who will integrate the existing actions and evaluate then report achievements transparently. Climate movement communities still have little achievement despite demands for bolder actions like weaving of programs from the government and private sectors implementing them due to the governing legal ground or just the lack of priority and interest.
Meanwhile, there are hundreds of millions of public, government or private-rooted Climate activists and their impact, if they engage and participate in a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) in a community-driven, new and good governance within a blockchain technology, can showcase the ultimate decarbonization of housing and contruction materials chain both on the ground and in the digital space using the CLIMATE decentCHAIN mobile app.
What is your solution?
CLIMATE decentCHAIN
Decentralized and Autonomous Organization for Climate Action Chain (CLIMATE decentCHAIN), Inc. develops an agile, scientific and fully-transparent, innovative dApp prototype also named "CLIMATE decentCHAIN" in a blockchain with multiple-use, if not comprehensive, approaches and strategies all designed to reach decarbonization in housing and construction materials full chain by forming a Decentralized and Autonomous Organization (DAO). As a DAO, the CLIMATE decentCHAIN is independent on the government's decision whether they are to take the appropriate and bold action to address Climate Change (CC). In the same context, the CLIMATE decentCHAIN acts before private companies start to move and improve their production, packaging, warehousing and distribution technologies.
BLOCKCHAIN and decentralized App (dApp)
- Allows anyone to create an account and earn a cryptocurrency and a good citizenship badge based on climate actions taken by its community
- Accommodates and allows the forming of its Decentralized and Autonomous Organization (DAO) community to have a stronger voice in demanding for government and private companies to move towards decarbonization and for low-income earners to appreciate and accept affordable, low-carbon and sustainable house units designed and planned through a decentralized processes within the DAO community
- Allows its DAO community to create a call and vote for a climate action
- Recommends a list of climate actions with corresponding rewards
- Introduces designs and plans for low-carbon housing programs or projects that also include and allocate a space for growing food for household consumption, a program to earn cash, and a natural protection system against strong typhoon and climate-related disasters
- Incorporates multiple-use approach to tree components in the plan; varying species and size can be a windbreaker, effective water absorber, a path shed, a natural yard cooling system, and a source of food or medicine of the low-carbon housing community
- Develops and solicits submission of low-carbon housing design and plans and construction materials production, warehousing, and distribution technologies
- Shows housing and construction materials companies, their GHG emission, and emission intensity, offsetting mechanism, and climate action plans or its absence
- Creates a market for producing low-carbon housing and construction materials technology
- Catalyzes the shift from high-carbon to low-carbon and the emergence of new low-carbon business ventures with guaranteed (buyers and supporters) market
- Improves the way of living and perspective of own-house dreamers by giving the sense of self-empowerment through acquisition of a decent, stylish and typhoon-proof house unit
- Disrupts high-carbon housing and construction materials market
- Produces more robust and focused data on housing and construction materials-associated emissions and determines the impacts of interventions
- Records, monitors, evaluates, learns and reports transparently climate and climate action data and information, trends and projections
- Shows support for the development of community-based forests per village or city and municipality
- Demonstrates the scenario and reasoning behind the necessity for each person to grow forests within the community or home town at an early age or before s/he reaches the age when s/he needs to construct a house or avail a housing unit
- Demonstrates a better evaluation for business permit issuance/renewal, wedding permit issuance, college acceptance, or a financial assistance acceptance
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
There are four social group partners in the design of CLIMATE decentCHAIN:
Low-income, decent home dreamers
- Direct and first desired DAO community members
- Aspires to own a decent home but depends heavily in government housing program which units are high-carbon constructed, located out-of-place, difficult access from and to the source of economic activity, offers no protection against climate-related disasters, and often dilapidated after a few years of use
- At the demand side of the target market
Climate activists
- Another main and desired DAO community members
- Drivers of good change, source of innovative ideas, and expected to be the major supporters of low-carbon or decarbonized action
- Could be at the demand or supply side of the target market
- Sellers of potential low-carbon ideas or technologies
All industries within the construction materials production, packaging, distribution, and warehousing chain
- Desired DAO community members
- Receivers of demands for low-carbon housing construction materials
- At the supplier side of the market
Government
- Expected adopter of innovation through laws and policies
How are you and your team well-positioned to deliver this solution?
Our team is composed of diverse experts complementing each other's understanding of the problem and challenges, as well as, the opportunities especially in the use of emerging technologies and its associated risks. Many of the members are profiled among the low-income community. All members have experienced purchasing high costs of construction materials at least once after a strong typhoon destroyed a substandard, high carbon and no-protection house. The team is also equipped with legal grounds, application processes and requirements about the housing programs in the Philippines. Core team's experience in developing and implementing a Decentralized and Autonomous Organization (DAO) within the blockchain technology gives full confidence to the entire team. The Founder is also a successful innovator in forest and biodiversity protection recognized (for addressing two SDGs - Climate Action and Life On Land) and awarded by The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and United Nations.

What makes your solution innovative?
The innovativeness of CLIMATE decentCHAIN is supported by:
- Full decentralization and autonomous approach which make taking action more flexible, much faster, and apolitical; the DAO community members drive the direction and independence from inaction of government or snob of private companies;
- Combination of full transparency and anonymity is possible;
- Bring new and better governance through the DAO;
- Disrupt the current business-as-usual market and create and determine new markets right away;
- Create a meeting of buyers and sellers that is hussle-free;
- Change in view of 'decent homes';
- Introduce new standards (or ways to achieve agreements) and even protocols for availing decent homes;
- Create opportunities to review the current ways of producing construction materials and build a new era of doing business;
- Can form convergence of market (DAO community members) that can deny market of high-carbon construction materials; and,
- Can help communities revert to a 'nature-based living' - one with a decent home protected from climate change adversities, and a nearby source of materials for repairs and refurbish, and source of income.
What are your impact goals for the next year and the next five years, and how will you achieve them?
NEXT YEAR
- First 10,000 DAO community members formed and have a common understanding and agreement that every human regardless of his/her socioeconomic status has the right for a decent home and within a housing community are sufficient source of construction materials for repair and refurbish, sources of income, and protection against climate-related disasters;
- Version 1.0 of a sound, long-term and sustainable climate action-based cryptocurrency and blockchain badge system completed while its agility, adaptiveness and transparency are maintained; and,
- Climate action-based token and badge reward protocols developed and implemented.
NEXT FIVE YEARS
- New low-carbon technologies for processing construction materials started to emerge;
- Nature-based, sustainable and housing designs and plans developed and started getting acceptance from the target market;
- High-carbon construction materials companies shifted or implemented hybrid with low-carbon;
- Companies venturing in low-carbon construction materials production emerged;
- First decarbonized community housing design and plan accepted and/or constructed and with successful buy; and,
- Government getting interest in CLIMATE decentCHAIN and views of potential adoption of similar systems, approaches and methods started.
How are you measuring your progress toward your impact goals?
CLIMATE decentCHAIN's primary indicators of progress:
At the global scale,
- At least 1% of the global population joined the DAO and contributed proactively in the next 5 years; and increased by 2% in every 3 years thereafter;
- Market (suppliers and buyers of DAO community) balanced in the next 5-7 years;
- 50% of housing construction materials companies made a hybrid low-carbon with already existing high-carbon production in the next 20 years; and 95% full shift to low-carbon processing after 40 years;
- 80% of emerging housing construction materials companies implement low carbon technologies in the next 35 years;
- First decarbonized housing community designed, planned and constructed and accepted in the next 5 years; and builds momentum to gain a 300% increase in decarbonized housing community development after another 5 years; and,
- Cryptocurrency stabilized in the next 3 years; and gained stable value appreciation by at least 1-5% every year thereafter.
What is your theory of change?
Decarbonized housing and housing construction materials chain can be achieved if new markets are created. New markets can be created if high-carbon companies shift or hybrid with low-carbon design and production chain technologies or new players venture into low-carbon housing and construction materials business. The shift, hybrid or even emergence of new low-carbon business ventures can happen if a significant demand for such is created. Demand for low-carbon housing units, programs, designs, plans and its construction materials can be created if decent housing units with provision for household food production, protection against climate-related disasters, and source of income as well as access to other community services are included. Well-designed, naturebased and decent housing programs are developed if a diverse mix and communicating community of market (buyers, sellers, and think-tanks) discussed pressing issues, challenges and opportunities and risks and proactively engaged in recommending solutions, voting for potentially-sound solutions, complement these solutions and spring fellow community members to take the recommendations into actual products, services or technologies. Congregation of markets can happen if there is a digital and safe space to accommodate this and disrupts the business-as-usual scenario using the blockchain technology.
