Urban-Biz

The Urban-Biz is a long-term community service project that plays a role in creating a more inclusive entrepreneurial community among poor urban through exposure to various digital business platforms and strategies to generate wider economic opportunities.

What specific problem are you solving?

The Covid-19 pandemic heavily affected poor urban dwellers in Malaysia. While 7% of low-cost public housing flats (PPR) household heads had never attended school, 59% of them had at least a secondary education. They are only able to find low-skilled employment with low wages due to their lower educational attainment. Given the impact of Covid-19 and the fact that 3.8% of PPR household heads work on a temporary or part-time job.  Around 20% of households in PPRs are self-employed or run small companies to make a living. Hence, the hysteresis impact of Covid-19 is hugely impacted poor urban and imposed a big threat to quality of life.

What is your solution?

We are proposing a knowledge transfer program involving mid-term coaching on digital-based business solutions using social network services ie. Lazada, Shopee, TikTok and Instagram. 

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

Our solution should be reskilling and upskilling the business skills and strategies among poor urban in Selangor. These communities are categorized as poor urban dwellers with a monthly household income of less than USD 670.They will be coached on developing their business knowledge, skills and strategies with the help of social network sites.

How are you and your team well-positioned to deliver this solution?

Our team is comprised of lecturers and practitioners from various fields: e-commerce, entrepreneurs, and digital media. Our university emphasizes entrepreneurship and has a strong link with industry. The communities will be given the voices to share their opinions and views.

Make it easier and more affordable for individuals and MSMEs to make investments and transfer payments, across geographies and across different types of platforms

We are currently equipped with the modules of training and the deployment of the project is scheduled for 1st of June 2023.

We have received thirty-six participants from the targeted audience as our first batch of mentees.

We are applying to Solve so that we can gain more diverse business models, skills and strategies on our teams besides the monetary benefit for the program especially when monitoring and supporting the initial steps of business from the participants

More About Your Solution

What makes your solution innovative?

We are working on the ease-of-use technology feature that is accessible by mostly all kinds of life - mobile phones and the internet. These two important things will be the tools and platforms for business among poor urban dwellers.

What are your impact goals for the next year and the next five years, and how will you achieve them?

We are targeting at least half of the participants will be able to generate a stable income of no less than RM2000 monthly per household. In the next five years, we are aiming of them being a group entrepreneurs that will be able to give to society.
