No single government, institution, or organization can solve this problem alone when the biggest contributor is waste, something that everyone produces every day. As such, we need to maximize and optimize the resources that we already have. At Gringgo, we do this by leveraging technology (GIS, AI, etc.) through our platform, to help improve the effectiveness and efficiency, as well as information tracking of community-based waste collecting and processing activities for a better environmental condition. Additionally, previous use cases have shown an increase in the income of waste collectors as well. Scaling this solution will increase the livelihoods of many waste collectors in Indonesia.

At Gringgo, we are aiming to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of waste management systems in Indonesia, by leveraging technology not to replace but to empower communities. In Indonesia, the largest community involved in the waste management system is the waste collectors community. These waste collectors are tasked to visit residential houses to collect their waste regularly. Even so, the rate of collection in Indonesia is 40% (less than neighboring countries with 70%), and 70% of the waste ends up in landfills. As such, there is a clear need of increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of waste collection procedures in Indonesia. We aim to do this by empowering all parties involved in the waste collection system with easy and enjoyable technology. We hope that this will in turn increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the process, and hence allow waste collectors to reach a wider area of collection.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves waste collectors, and improves workability and the amount of waste collected through digital technology. Waste collectors are communities that have low and irregular incomes in Indonesia, but their role is very vital. Sometimes they just depend on selling used goods that they get from the waste collection every day. In addition, the sale and price of used goods that are not transparent, only benefits the higher level of the trading. All because the manual system and there is no regulation for it. the problems could be solve by digital technology that provide transparency for all stakeholders in the targeted sector.
How does the problem you are addressing, the solution you have designed, and the population you are serving align with the Challenge?
The solution helps in ticking all three checklists that were provided by the challenge by allowing a low-income community such as waste collectors in Indonesia, to live up to their employers’ and countries’ needs of effectiveness and efficiency. Due to the fact that we are also connecting them with other communities such as the waste processing community, they will also be able to earn additional income. In previous use cases, we have seen an increase of income of around USD256 per month for the waste collectors.
Additionally, every time we begin a new project with a new area, we make it a point to conduct training and ensure that our application is moderately tailored to their needs. This will allow the workers to familiarize themselves with digital applications such as ours, and allow them to acquire a transferable digital skill in the process.

We use digital technology to achieve effectiveness in waste collection. With digital technology that has been supported by Ai, it will make data collection and field evaluation easier to increase the next target. And by increasing the work efficiency of waste workers, we are able to increase the amount of waste collected which is in line with the increase in the number of waste workers' income from the results of trading raw materials as additional income.
Describe the core technology that powers your solution.
Our solution uses Geographic Information System (GIS), data collection and barcode scanning to help waste collectors identify their tasks, waste and plan the most efficient routes. Additionally, we have an application that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is currently being trained and possibly incorporated with our current proposal in the future. This AI aims to help anyone identify different types of wastes to boost waste segregation.

What are your impact goals for the next year and the next five years, and how will you achieve them?
Our next year impact goals is to cover and increase the livelihood of waste workers in 1 new province/city in Indonesia. We are actively selecting and contacting the waste collectors to grow with us. Our 5 years plan is this platform could be used nationally in Indonesia. Not only contacting and partnering with private sectors, we also tap in to the government sector as a regulator in the area.

Area covering : For the next few years, we targeting 1 new area covered by our system per 6 months.
Users : We aim the users of our platform increased at least 10% per months and gain 80% traction.
Partnership : We targeting 1 new partner per quarter.

How are you and your team well-positioned to deliver this solution?
Most available solutions focus on building something from scratch. Although they are tracking crucial steps, we are in a fight against time and the increasing amount of waste every day. We don’t have the time to build something from the ground up. We recognize that there are existing communities that play big roles in our waste management processes, for example, the waste collectors communities and the recycling communities. Our team chose to instead focus on the strengths that these existing communities have and amplify that by leveraging technology to help existing communities do their jobs in a more effective, efficient, and large-scale way. We communicate directly with these communities and work together alongside them. Additionally, we also aim to provide a cross-community platform for them to connect and create a steady flow of supply and demand. At the same time, we would like to build a sharing economy system, to improve the livelihoods of all parties involved in the process.

I build a team and place the right people according to their skills, experience and passion. Making this team able to continue to grow and achieve higher targets. The team has no boundaries of gender, race, religion and belief. We work together to achieve the targets that have been set professionally.

What is your operational model?
We providing digital literacy and digital technology to improve waste worker livelihoods in Indonesia. They are seen as the lower class because they have a low income. With digital technology that can support their work, with the amount of raw material obtained increases, it is hoped that they can get additional income to support their lives.
