Solution Overview

Solution Name:

GET AHEAD OF COVID-19

One-line solution summary:

We will conduct clinical studies with 3 drugs to decrease lung damage and death in Covid-19 infected patients

Pitch your solution.

The pandemic caused by Covid-19 infection has so far caused more than 450,000 deaths worldwide. This situation affects our most vulnerable population and threatens to increase poverty and hunger in developing countries.

Vaccines and isolation measures are only delaying what seems inevitable.

Covid -19 is a new virus to humanity, so new that our immune system responds in an inappropriate way to try to contain it.

In this fight our organism "attacks itself", especially the lungs. Respiratory failure is the most important cause of death in infected patients.

We investigate about non-expensive drugs, that decrease the inflammatory response, we may be able to save thousands of lives before they have respiratory insufficiency, save them before they die.

GET AHEAD OF COVID 19 will conduct clinical studies with 3 drugs that have been sufficiently studied, are safe and promising by decreasing the inflammatory response that causes lung damage and death.

What specific problem are you solving?

The pandemic caused by the covid 19 infection has surprised all of humanity. No health system was prepared to control this situation, despite the WHO's warnings. Right now there are more than 8 million infected and more than 450 thousand deaths. The drugs used for medical management are very expensive (retroviral agents and hydroxychloroquine) and their efficacy has not been established. Development of an effective vaccine could be delayed
When we examine the vulnerable population: hypertensive, diabetic, obese, over 65 years; We found a common factor, the difficulty of these patients to regulate the inflammatory response in their bodies. The inflammation produced by the infection causes respiratory damage and death.
We have evidence that some medications such as colchicine, melatonin, allopurinol have anti-inflammatory effects that could decrease this response and prevent respiratory distress and death. These medications are inexpensive, available, and have minimal side effects.
We want to conduct clinical trials using these drugs, to evaluate their effectiveness.
Utility and global impact, by decreasing morbidity and mortality, low cost and easy implementation could help all of humanity in a fast and effective way.
The economic damage could be reduced by returning to our daily activities.

What is your solution?

Our research evaluates 3 medications: colchicine, allopurinol and melatonin. Through three controlled, randomized clinical studies, comparing cases and controls, we will measure the efficacy of these drugs in the prevention of respiratory distress syndrome caused by Covid-19 infection.
We have scientific evidence that these medications can favorably change the clinical course of Covid-19 infection by decreasing the requirement for ventilatory support. We have made scientific publications in favor of these ideas.
We know that 20% of infected patients have respiratory symptoms and that at least 5% will require ventilators to maintain survival.
A group of patients who are at higher risk will be selected: hypertensive, diabetic, hypothyroid, obese, over 65 years, diagnosed with covid-19 and who require outpatient or hospital management. One of the three medications will be administered and will be compared with a control group.
The conclusions of these studies will be shared with the international scientific community so that, if positive results are obtained, they will be implemented quickly.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

This solution directly impacts all of humanity, since they are low-cost alternatives and easy to implement, they have a global and immediate impact.

Especially the poorest and developing countries obtain benefits, the countries with the most precarious health services due to the low cost of medicines.
