Solution Overview

Solution Name:

eggXYt

One-line solution summary:

Saving 8 billion male chicks, saving billions of dollars and adding 8 billion eggs to the global supply.

Pitch your solution.

eggXYt’s mission is to enable a sustainable future in the livestock industry. eggXYt’s CRISPR based technology allows non-invasive pre-incubation sex detection in chicken eggs - saving 8 billion male chicks from being unnecessarily hatched and disposed of each year, saving the industry billions of dollars and adding 8 billion eggs to the global supply. eggXYt is allowing ethically sourced male-chick-culling-free eggs to reach the market, answering the demand of conscious egg consumers.

Film your elevator pitch.

What specific problem are you solving?

Each year the Layer Chicken industry sends 16 billion fertile eggs to hatcheries, where they are incubated for 3 weeks and only after they are hatched–are they manually identified as male or female by human chicken sexers. So 50 percent of the eggs, the male chicks – which are useless for both poultry and layer industries– are immediately disposed of, wasting billions of dollars. This is a massive financial and ethical challenge.

What is your solution?

eggXYt’s CRISPR based proprietary technology revolutionizes the chicken industry. Using a biomarker on the male chromosome of a chicken embryo, the sex of the chick is detectable once the egg is laid, and more importantly before the chick hatches. Scanning the egg through the shell, eggXYt is saving billions of dollars on incubation and manual sexing costs: 8 billion male chicks will be saved from unnecessary incubation and immediate killing, and the male non incubated eggs could be repurposed to be used in the food, pharma or cosmetic industries. The eggXYt layers lay ethical “male chick culling free eggs” – in total, eggXYt’s technology creates a $300B opportunity.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

By reducing the costs of egg production, eggXYt is safeguarding a major source of high-quality protein, which is particularly important for sustaining lower-income populations. eggXYt is promoting more sustainable and responsible egg production by turning waste into a product, preventing male eggs from becoming male chicks, that are then being discarded, and repurposing the male eggs to be sold in the global markets. It is answering the demand by responsible consumers for male chick-culling free table eggs.

Which dimension of the Challenge does your solution most closely address?

Improve supply chain practices to reduce food loss, scale new business models for producer-market connections, and create low-carbon cold chains

Explain how the problem, your solution, and your solution’s target population relate to the Challenge and your selected dimension.

eggXYt’s technology achieves great greenhouse gas emissions cuts as well as advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The global livestock industry is one of the biggest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. By saving the incubation of half of all layer chicken eggs, eggXYt is allowing hatcheries to cut 50% of its operational capacity, including industrial incubators, transportation activity and disposed waste. This will lead to major cuts in greenhouse gas emissions in the egg industry.

Which of the following categories best describes your solution?

A new technology

Describe what makes your solution innovative.

Other technologies in development are invasive and only work after a few days of incubation. This isn’t acceptable for the industry. eggXYt offers an elegant non-invasive way to detect the chick’s sex, pre-incubation, at the speed of light. It maximizes cost savings by preventing the male chick eggs from ever entering the hatchery. Sexing at day 0 allows repurposing the eggs to be sold in the global egg markets. It is non-invasive, therefore it does not affect eggs’ fertility. It is more accurate and is as fast as the light used to detect the biomarker.

Provide evidence that this technology works.

What organizations do you currently partner with, if any? How are you working with them?

eggXYt is working hand-in-hand with the leading industry players in the egg industry, including leading chicken breeders and hatchery equipment manufacturing companies.

Your Business Model & Funding

What is your business model?

eggXYt’s business model draws directly from the value it provides to its clients, through royalty agreements and a Sexing-as-a-Service revenue model.

Using its seXYt IoT scanner device to automatically detect the sex of eggs at the entrance of hatcheries, eggXYt is charging the hatcheries according to a SaaS model - Sexing as a Service. eggXYt charges a fee per egg, that represents a share of the financial benefit to hatcheries.

We are also negotiating royalty agreements with breeders, who are going to market the eggXYt sex detectable chicken breed for a premium, and will pay a share of these premiums back to eggXYt as royalties.

Finally, eggXYt will create ethical eggs consumer brands in collaboration with major supermarket chains and will charge royalties from the sales of premium, chick-culling free eggs.
