Data Backbone of a Clean Air & Water Economy

Pitch us on your solution

Solve the air & water pollution problems by increasing transparency and accountability through data. Blue Sky Analytics is building AI powered
geospatial data intelligence platforms which provide high resolution data and insights into key air & water quality and source emissions parameters.

Bangladesh suffers from highly unaccountable textile industry sector that is polluting both air and water resources and inflicting adverse health and environmental damages.

Moreover, ironically, all the textile industries are removed from large global brands which have huge sustainability goals by two-three degrees of seperations; yet no sustainability or clean tech investments and technology development or incorporation finds its way to the polluting industries.

Blue Sky provides key environmental data to public, regulators, ESG investors to fundamentally transform monitoring system by competitive federalism to yield clean air and water for the people of Bangladesh

What is the problem you are solving?

Dhaka is often listed as the world's second most polluted city, right behind the neighbouring capital of Delhi which has been winning the crown for most polluted global city every years. Various studies have marked 123,000 premature deaths and 30 month lifespan reduction to air pollution crisis in Bangladesh.

The primary contributing factor to the poor state of air and water is most developing nations like Bangladesh is the lack of capacity and technological innovation in the environmental monitoring and regulation sector.

Blue Sky Analytics fundamentally solves this problem, by focusing on the monitoring sector and leveraging AI, ML, IoT and geospatial data to enable regulator with real-time data, detailed analytics, and insights.

This dissociation of monitoring and regulation between Blue Sky (a third party independent technology startup) and government & other ancillary agencies (the reactors in the pollution value chain) firstly decreases the burden, aligns responsibility and incentives, and brings in the technological advancement to one of the most innovation-deprived sector environmental monitoring to enable and catalyze informed solutions

Who are you serving?

We will work closely with Ministry of Environment and Forests, Bangladesh and the Department of Environment along with other non-profit organizations international agencies, corporate CSR, and the media to increase transparency, understanding, and action in the Bangladeshi Environmental Monitoring sector to catalyze solutions.

Blue Sky solutions address the gap of requisite vs available monitoring data by leveraging AI and geospatial datasets.

What is your solution?

Bkue Sky Analytics has built automated multi-source data ingestion platform for various geospatial products from ESA & NASA and on-ground monitors (government or low-cost) using cloud infrastructure. Currently, data from over 1700 monitors 4 pertinent satellites automatically feeds into the Blue Sky S3 data lake for further cleaning. It is then pre-processed with Serverless Lambda architecture due to large memory footprint & low costs. We use PostGIS for geospatial queries and time series databases (TimeScale DB) for improved processing, scalability, and resilience of our systems. Using artificial intelligence & hybrid (AI + deterministic) models, we convert these complex data-streams into actionable insights on the cloud with services such like AWS EMR & Sagemaker. We refer to all this plumbing bundled together as our geospatial data refinery which powers all our data dissemination platforms.

Through this proprietary algorithm, we will be able to provide air quality data with 10000x better spatial resolution at a fraction of cost, compared to current ground measurement methods. On the customer side, we disseminate these actionable insights through raw data APIs, visualizations as embeds, and freemium web & mobile App BreeZo. By these channels, we are able to cater to a large spectrum of audience with varying levels of sophistication from moms to insurance analysts to scientists thereby maximizing our impact.

Our vision is to build Bloomberg for environmental indicators to enable informed decisions & actions through fast, accessible, and relevant information and analytics.

More about your solution

Describe what makes your solution innovative.

Every year, millions of people become victims of air pollution. More than 300 million people across the Indo-Gangetic plains breathe toxic air which not only impacts their health but also degrades the quality of their life. To understand pollution, various public and private institutions carry out air quality monitoring using manual systems, Beta Attenuation Monitors, and low cost IoT devices. These are mostly installed in urban and semi-urban areas, leading to sparse data collection and unfair allocation of resources.

With BreeZo, air quality information can be obtained at a very high spatial resolution of 1km2. The app is user-centric enabling common people, technocrats, governments, and enterprises to use air quality data as needed.

The underlying technology of BreeZo is a huge geospatial data refinery with automated pipelines (AI-driven) which fetch data from satellites, government installed systems and low cost IoT monitors. The machine learning algorithms we've developed clean, organize, and process this huge corpus of big data to give intelligence on air quality which is rendered as analytics on BreeZo.

Our solution & innovation is targeted at making environmental data valuable and easily accessible. Blue Sky is building products which transform existing environment monitoring & regulation system. With the use of deep tech, we want to change the age-old mindset which perpetuates environment protection as someone else's job.

Why do you expect your solution to address the problem?

Large spatial and temporal gaps in the air quality & emissions data has made air pollution monitoring system unreliable. Manual monitoring makes turnaround time for this data as 3-10 months, in some cases, 4-5 years. Blue Sky systems & technology would provide air quality and emissions data is available at daily/weekly frequency. With our innovation, we expect to change the following:

1. Transparency, & accountability: with media coverage of near real-time emissions data, regulatory agencies can initiate swifter actions against offenders. Instead of the current, unrepresented and self-reported monthly or quarterly emissions data, high-frequency & high-resolution emissions data from an independent satellite-based technology will transform the regulatory system.

2. Transformation of the APCD market: The industrial ecosystem will invest in pollution abatement equipment rather than pollution hiding measures (i.e. bribing). At present, the Air Pollution Control Device (APCD) industry is based on the existing regulatory framework which promotes installing devices but their efficacy is unchecked, leading to a proliferation of low-quality cheap devices.

3. Competitive federalism: High-resolution and high-frequency data will be made available for each industry in all states. For a power plant officer in Chittagong, emissions data for a plant in Dhaka will be accessible, promoting cooperative federalism among states to combat the menace of air pollution together in industrialized centers of Bangladesh
