Case Studies

Leveraging a Pipeline of Best-in-Class Innovators

Partner: General Motors

Since 2018, Solve and General Motors (GM) have partnered to support solutions that help create smart, safe, and sustainable communities around the world.

Together, we have hosted Challenge Design workshops and Solveathon workshops with GM’s senior teams across the US to help design and promote Solve’s Global Challenges and the GM Prize. To date, GM has awarded funding to twelve Solver teams including: JusticeText, Air-Ink, Thaki, and Livox;.

In 2018, Solver Livox received the $25,000 General Motors Prize for Advanced Technologies to help them enable millions of non-verbal disabled people to communicate and learn. Through intelligent algorithms and machine learning, Livox adapts content for students with disabilities, whether they be verbal, motor, cognitive, or visual disorders.

Since partnering, Livox and GM have worked to expand Livox’s technology by applying their intelligent algorithms to prevent distracted driving. Now, the artificial intelligence that created Livox can help save millions of lives from accidents caused by distracted driving.

Fostering AI and Data Science for Good

Partner: Patrick J. McGovern Foundation

Since 2018, Solve and the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation have worked together to accelerate solutions using cutting-edge data science, artificial intelligence, or machine learning to benefit humanity.

Through their AI for Humanity Prize, the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation has supported 16 Solver teams: Irth - Birth Without Bias, Hiveonline, ProGame - Coding WITHOUT Computers!, Mapeo, Ubenwa, Mosquito-Borne Disease Prevention, MapSights, International Wakashan AI-Consortium, Algramo, Retos, Kinedu, Blue Sky Analytics, Livox, ADA Health, ISeeChange, and Refactored.AI.

Additionally, Solve and the Foundation recently co-designed a virtual short course to help social impact entrepreneurs everywhere leverage artificial intelligence–including machine learning and other data science methods–to broaden and deepen their social impact.

The Foundation's partnership and support has enabled significant innovation to address some of the most urgent challenges facing humanity. In the case of Coastal Communities Solver ISeeChange, the Foundation saw an opportunity to leverage AI in the fight against climate change. ISeeChange first received Patrick J. McGovern Foundation Betterment of Humanity Prize at Solve Challenge Finals in 2018. After a successful year building an AI proof of concept, ISeeChange received a $100,000 follow-on grant to develop AI to support their platform for community-based climate adaptation. With this support, ISeeChange developed new AI features to organize their data and prototype event driven analysis and prompts alongside weather and satellite data.

Since partnering with the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, ISeeChange has expanded to Montana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Greater Massachusetts to document heat, drought, water quality, sea level rise, erosion, and extreme rains and flooding.

Strengthening the Innovation Ecosystem in Indo-Pacific

Partners: Atlassian Foundation and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Solve, Atlassian Foundation, and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) formed a partnership to activate social entrepreneurship ecosystems in Indo-Pacific countries.

This collaboration has garnered $4.6 million in committed funding across 10 Solver teams to pilot and scale their solutions. One of these teams was Jakarta-based Youth, Skills, & Workforce of the Future Solver Ruangguru.

Through a digital bootcamp, Ruangguru gives dropped-out youth the resources they need to pass their exams and earn their graduation certificate. Between DFAT and Atlassian, over $1 million in funding has been committed to Ruangguru, allowing Ruangguru to sustainably scale their organization.

In April 2019, representatives from DFAT and the Atlassian Foundation visited Ruangguru in their office in Jakarta. At this visit, the representatives from DFAT and Atlassian were able to see the positive impact Ruangguru was having on its target community and better understand Ruangguru’s needs. Today, Ruangguru serves more than 15 million users with over 300,000 teachers, and plans to scale even larger in its upcoming phase with the support of DFAT, Atlassian, and Solve.
